#SOPA and #PIPA; Why we should be concerned.

I’ve been seeing people on my twitter timeline complaining about Wikipedia’s choice to go down today for 24 hours. What they don’t know what this choice is actually a protest against SOPA and PIPA. Since Wikipedia is the starting point (or only point) of information many people use, this bill will affect us regardless of where the bill is being passed (if it does).

Stop Online Piracy Act(SOPA) and Protect Intellectual Property Act (PIPA):

Everyone agrees that the creator of content should have rights to protect them against piracy. However, the SOPA and PIPA allows more than that, which would make companies like Facebook, Twitter and Wikipedia to be their own online police.

It makes me wonder if Jessi Slaughter‘s Dad was kidding or foretelling the future. “The consequences will never be the same!” Sorry, trust me to make a joke out of this! Don’t backtrace me!

Let me put it English, to the best of my understanding, what SOPA and PIPA does:

If I had a daughter as adorable as the lovely Sophia Grace and decided to record her singing a copyrighted song (Which, all pop songs should be) and upload it on YouTube, YouTube will be put under pressure to remove the content, and I would very well be sued by the record label.

That means no more music from lovely Debbie or Amira in the future!

What if SOPA and PIPA passes?

So if PIPA or SOPA passes Congress as it is, we would all have to start researching the good old way: Books! If you find that you’re basically at a loss on the Internet partially without Wikipedia today, think about what happens when the bill gets passed.

Do your part.

I love the Internet because it’s open and free. Trolls get to be as smart-assed as they wish, Aspiring Singers can upload a cover up onto YouTube and share their talents with everyone around the world. SOPA and PIPA will cripple the Internet.

Don’t let it happen. Learn more, and also learn about what you can do from the Wikipedia’s SOPA and PIPA page and SOPA Strike Homepage.

Here’s another educational video from TheYoungTurks on YouTube.

Alternatively, this is what my favorite genre of Youtube videos might look like.

Please do something about this or else I’d have to get a (real) life! :(
